Animals or fruit?

We were driving through NM when I spied a herd of pronghorn antelope. I pointed them out to the boys and told them what they were.

L3 (5yrs): I know of a food called cantaloupe. Is that the same thing?

Reading Slug

L2 (7yrs old) triumphantly, pushing back his empty cereal bowl: The reading slug is done!
Me: The reading slug?
L2: The reading slug!
Me: What’s a reading slug?
L2: Didn’t you say that one of your sisters was a reading slug and you tried to coax her outside to play with you but she just wanted to read?
Me: Ahh… a bookworm!

Opinions of babies and toddlers

I was chatting with L2 (7yrs) today about stopping to see a new church family this week.

L2: Do you know their kids’ names?

Me: No.

L2: Then I don’t want to go.

Me: You need to know their kids’ names before you want to go visit them?

L2: Well, sometimes when I hear names, I can start to categorize people in my head as to whether they are boys or girls.

Me: I can tell you that they have a baby boy and a young girl about L3’s age. And two more kids.

L2: Then I definitely don’t want to go. Babies and toddlers are always selfish and aggressive. They never want to share their toys and they always scream. And it makes me want to beat them. Except I don’t want hurt them when I beat them. So I’d just rather not go.

Me, me, me

L2 (7yrs) and L3 (5yrs) interrupted each other trying to talk to me.  I told them to figure out who would share their question first.
L2: You
L3 (simultaneously): Me
L2: We should be generous. You should be thinking me and I should be thinking you. Love does not seek its own.
L3: Me me me
L2: You should be thinking of others
L3: Me me me
L2: You’re thinking of yourself
L3: So, me?

Close away

L3 (5yrs. Looking at the pretend map in his hand): We are close away from our car. That’s what my map says.

On the topic of death…

during our time in Georgia in March…

L3 (age 5): Mom, when Daddy and my brothers both die and it’s just you and me left, I’ll take care of… <pauses and takes a deep breath> …my brother’s Lego Mobile Command center and make sure it doesn’t get broken.
