We woke up this morning in the backcountry, rain falling steadily on our tent.  L3 (age 29mo) was the first child to wake up and I quieted him with a finger to the mouth.  We lay in our sleeping bags for twenty minutes, listening to the rain and exchanging smiles.  Finally, L3 spoke up.

Potty.

You can go in your diaper this morning, I said. It’s raining outside and we would get wet if we went out of the tent.

L3 was quiet for a few minutes and then spoke again.

Hungee. (Hungry)

I hear that you’re hungry, but we’re going to wait for a bit before we eat. If we went out now, we would get all wet and our food would get wet too!

L3 was quiet for a minute and then spoke a third time.

Home.

You want to be home?

Yes.
